Helena local guide
Helena sits in the Prickly Pear Valley off I-15, with three Missouri River reservoirs, Canyon Ferry, Hauser and Holter, a short drive east and north. That shapes where the storage is: a string of RV and boat lots lines Canyon Ferry Road in East Helena (Prickly Pear, Spokane Creek, A-Storage and Hollowtop nearby), and in town there are indoor units at North Helena Storage off Lincoln Road, Helena Self Storage on Jordan Drive and York Road Storage on Toole Drive.
Prices run from cheap open spaces to heated or enclosed bays. North Helena lists outdoor 15x45 spaces at $45 a month and indoor 14x50 bays with 14-foot doors at $250, Prickly Pear rents 40x14 spaces for $45, and Spokane Creek has enclosed units up to a 50-foot pull-through with power for battery tenders, plus a tenant dump and wash bay. Enclosed space fills up before winter, and several sizes showed waiting lists on the check date.
Winter is the main reason to find a lot. Helena City Code 7-8-5 bans parking or storing trailers, RVs and boats on any public right-of-way from November 1 to April 15 unless the City Manager issues a permit. Hardship permits allow 72 hours at most, and violators can be towed at the owner's expense.
On the water, the Bureau of Reclamation lists three Canyon Ferry marinas: Kim's and Yacht Basin, which both have ramps, fuel and boat rentals, and Goose Bay toward Townsend, with steel-and-concrete slips and fenced dry storage. On Hauser Lake, Helena Boat Rental on York Road rents pontoons, fishing boats, kayaks, canoes and paddleboards.
Every boat entering Montana has to be inspected for aquatic invasive species before it launches, and wake boats with ballast need decontamination. Montana FWP's Vessel AIS Prevention Pass costs $30 for motorized and $10 for non-motorized watercraft, expires December 31 and can't be moved to another boat.
Across our three Helena guides we currently list 9 storage facilities, 2 RV dump stations, 2 named boat launches and 1 boat rental business, plus 3 marinas. Storage details come from each facility’s own website and the date we checked it. Dump stations and ramps come from OpenStreetMap. We never add prices, ratings or availability that a source does not publish.
