Great Falls takes its name from the falls of the Missouri River, which runs through the middle of town. The city sits where I-15 meets US-87 and US-89, with Malmstrom Air Force Base on the east side, so storage clusters along those roads: a row of yards on the Vaughn South Frontage Road by I-15, Gore Hill near the airport, Highway 89 Storage across from Malmstrom, and two facilities across the river in Black Eagle.

Indoor space is the main decision for a Montana winter. Gore Hill Self Storage rents 15x50 units with power, or with heat and power, plus 13x40 units with 14-foot doors, and it describes its heated units as some of the only ones in Great Falls. Foothills Storage also has a heated 50-foot RV unit, while Ox & Son, Bigfoot, West End and Eagle Eye keep outdoor yards with published monthly rates. Gore Hill also lists a free on-site RV sewer dump.

Parking a rig at the curb is not a long-term option in town. Since Ordinance 3230 took effect, an RV, trailer or boat can sit on the public right-of-way in a residential zone only to load or unload, for no more than 72 hours in any seven-day period, and moving it to another street does not reset the clock.

For paddling right in town, the city runs a self-service kayak kiosk with Rent.fun at West Bank Park in summer. Bigger water is upriver: Holter Lake, where Launch Watersports of Great Falls runs The Boat Loft with dry-stack storage, wet slips, fuel and boat rentals. Downriver, Fort Benton is the jumping-off point for the Upper Missouri, with canoe rentals from Missouri River Outfitters and a pay-per-use RV dump at the Chouteau County Fairgrounds. Floaters headed for the permitted Smith River can have boats delivered to Camp Baker and picked up at Eden Bridge by Montana River Outfitters.

Montana requires motorboats, personal watercraft and sailboats 12 feet and longer to be registered and numbered through the county treasurer; manually propelled boats are exempt, and boats registered elsewhere can be used here for up to 90 consecutive days. Nonresident boats need a Vessel Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Pass ($30 motorized, $10 nonmotorized, expiring December 31), and anyone towing a boat must stop at every open watercraft inspection station.
