Fresno city guide

Fresno local guide

Fresno is the jumping-off point for two kinds of trips. Boaters head northeast to Millerton Lake at Friant or east to Pine Flat Lake on the Kings River, both under an hour from town. RV owners use CA-41 north toward Yosemite and CA-180 east toward Kings Canyon and Sequoia. Storage follows the city's growth east and west: Dakota Park is on the west side, Quality RV Storage and Derrel's are on the east side near the airport, and Sunnyside Storage Yard is in Clovis.

Covered, enclosed or outdoor: what Fresno facilities offer

Fresno is a covered-storage town, and for good reason. Dakota Park Boat and R/V Storage has more than 300 covered and enclosed spaces with 16-foot ceilings and 14-foot doors, enough clearance for most motorhomes with rooftop air conditioners. It also runs a dump station and a covered wash station, handy for rinsing a boat after a day on Pine Flat. Derrel's Mini Storage on East Dakota Avenue offers the full range of uncovered, covered and fully enclosed RV and boat spaces near Fresno Yosemite International Airport.

Enclosed lockable units at Quality RV Storage were full with a waitlist when we checked, though the site also lists open-air spaces. In Clovis, Sunnyside Storage Yard rents 30x12 and 36x12 spaces and also had a waiting list. None of the four posts monthly prices on the pages we checked, so call for current rates; waiting lists suggest demand is high, and putting your name down early pays off.

When comparing, ask whether a covered space has side walls on the sun side, whether power is available for a battery maintainer and whether the lot is paved, which matters for keeping dust off a boat.

Access hours and security

Access policies vary widely and were not consistently posted, so confirm gate hours, after-hours access codes and camera coverage on a visit. Dakota Park's dump and wash stations let you prep a rig for storage on site, and Derrel's location near the airport is convenient to both Fresno and Clovis.

Parking an RV or boat at home in Fresno

The City of Fresno's parking page is blunt about street storage: recreational vehicles, trailers and boats parked on public streets must be moved at least 1,000 feet every 24 hours or they are considered abandoned, and the city recommends storing them at a private facility. Other vehicles fall under the 72-hour rule in Fresno Municipal Code Section 14-1006. On private property, the zoning code has a separate section, Section 15-2405, titled "Recreational Vehicles, Boats, Trailers, and Portable Storage," so read it before parking a trailer beside the house. Clovis has its own rules.

Central Valley heat and what it means for storage

Sun is the main enemy here. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Fresno Yosemite International Airport show a July average high of 97.7°F, about 113 days a year at 90°F or warmer and about 38 days at 100°F or more. Rain totals just 10.99 inches a year, almost all of it between fall and spring, and July and August are essentially dry. Winters are mild, with January averaging 55.4°F by day and 40.6°F at night and about 11 freezing nights a year. A roof over the rig is the single biggest step to protect tires, decals, roof membranes and upholstery, and a quick freeze plan covers the few cold nights. NOAA climate normals

Ramps, rentals and other California cities

Our Fresno boat ramps page lists the slipways OpenStreetMap shows within about 40 km of downtown; Pine Flat Lake is beyond that radius. OpenStreetMap shows no public RV dump station near enough to list for Fresno, so use a storage lot with its own station, such as Dakota Park, or a campground. Compare Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Diego on our California hub.

California's Division of Boating and Waterways issues the California Boater Card and publishes boating laws and safety information on its website.

Across our three Fresno guides we currently list 4 storage facilities, 3 RV dump stations, 1 named boat launch and 3 boat rental businesses. Storage details come from each facility’s own website and the date we checked it. Dump stations and ramps come from OpenStreetMap. We never add prices, ratings or availability that a source does not publish.
