Flagstaff sits high in the ponderosa pine country of northern Arizona, where I-40 meets I-17 and US-89 heads north toward Page. It has no large reservoir of its own, so local boating centers on the forest lakes southeast of town along Lake Mary Road: Upper and Lower Lake Mary, plus Ashurst Lake farther out.

Water levels decide where you can launch. The Coconino National Forest currently recommends only the south ramp at Upper Lake Mary for motorized boats, with the north courtesy dock out of the water, and advises four-wheel drive on the ramp. Kayaks and paddleboards can still go in at the north and south ramps and at the Narrows. Ashurst Lake allows a single electric motor or a single gas engine of up to 10 horsepower.

Storage here has to deal with mountain winters, so indoor and covered spaces are in demand. Route 66 Storage on the west side has indoor and covered bays with power, Flagstaff Ranch has outlets in each vehicle space and heated driveways, and Mini Storage of Northern Arizona publishes indoor 10x30 units at $220 a month. For open lots, Katlon on Old Walnut Canyon Road has spaces up to 40 feet and a keypad gate, and Flagstaff AZ RV & Boat Storage is west of town in Bellemont.

Rentals are small-craft: Canyon REO rents inflatable paddleboards and kayaks from its shop for the day, and the Lake Mary Country Store rents boats near the lakes. We have not found a public dump station in Flagstaff open to non-guests, but Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood lets non-campers dump for $20.

Arizona Game and Fish registers motorized watercraft, and that includes a canoe or kayak fitted with an electric trolling motor. A boat registered in another state may be used in Arizona for up to 90 days before it needs Arizona registration.
