Sheridan lies at the eastern foot of the Bighorn Mountains, where I-90 swings north toward Montana. The Bighorns climb steeply just west of town, so many boaters here tow to high mountain reservoirs in summer, while Lake DeSmet, just off I-90 between Sheridan and Buffalo, is the big water for powerboats.
Lake DeSmet's Mikesell-Potts Recreation Area, run by Johnson County on the south shore about 8 miles north of Buffalo off I-90 exit 51, has two boat ramps that are free to use. The county notes there is no potable water or dump station there, so fill and empty tanks before you go. In the mountains, Spear-O-Wigwam rents kayaks, canoes and paddleboards to non-guests beside Park Reservoir.
Most RV storage in Sheridan is outdoor parking at self-storage sites, but there are a few ways to get a roof over a rig. Sheridan Self Storage has covered 12x41 spaces at its fenced RV lot on Commercial Avenue, Storage Star on Coffeen Avenue offers covered parking, and Twin Buttes Storage on West 5th Street rents indoor RV bays up to 18x46 feet, with a waitlist. WY Not Store It, visible from I-90 at exit 23, publishes rates for 40-foot outdoor spaces and indoor units.
For emptying tanks, WYDOT lists the Sheridan Information Center on I-90 among its rest-area RV dump stations.
Wyoming requires an aquatic invasive species decal on almost every boat. A motorized boat registered in Wyoming pays $10 for the decal and one registered elsewhere pays $30. Non-motorized boats pay $5 for residents and $15 for nonresidents. Paddleboards and inflatables of 10 feet or less are exempt. Any boat brought into Wyoming from March 1 to November 30 must also be inspected before it launches.
