Casper local guide
Casper is Wyoming's second-largest city and sits on the North Platte River where I-25 swings west toward the state's center. US-20/26 runs west past Mills and Evansville toward Shoshoni, and State Route 220 follows the river southwest to the big Bureau of Reclamation reservoirs at Alcova and Pathfinder, the main boating water for Natrona County.
Wind and long winters drive the storage choices here. Basecamp Storage on Foster Road rents fully enclosed, insulated 20x60-foot bays with 30 and 50 amp outlets and snow removal, publishing $1,000 a month or $11,000 a year. At the other end, open lots on CY Avenue and North Justin Morgan Road are inexpensive: Casper RV Storage lists spaces at $40 a month, and EZ RV Storage charges $50 for a 42-foot stall or $65 for a 55-foot pull-through. Boaters can also use Casper Marine & Rec, which posts outdoor boat storage at $300 for the winter and a seasonal indoor rate for boats up to 26 feet.
Alcova Resort, about 30 miles southwest, is the closest full marina, with seasonal slip leases, a fuel dock and rentals ranging from pontoons to paddleboards. It closes for the winter and reopens May 15, 2027. Pathfinder Marina, farther up the river at Pathfinder Reservoir near the Diabase Campground, has two ramps and a store that sells groceries, tackle and 91 octane gas; it also opens in May 2027. Check both before planning an early-season trip, since spring weather on the high plains can be unpredictable.
Wyoming guards its reservoirs against zebra and quagga mussels. Any watercraft brought into the state from March 1 through November 30 must be inspected by an authorized inspector before launching, and anyone transporting a boat must stop at check stations along the way. A boat that has been in water infested with zebra or quagga mussels within the last 30 days must be inspected before launching at any time of year. Nearly all motorized boats and most nonmotorized craft must also display a Wyoming AIS decal on the water.
