Charlotte local guide
Charlotte has no big lake inside the city limits, but three Catawba River reservoirs ring it. Lake Norman fills the north end of Mecklenburg County past Huntersville and Cornelius, Mountain Island Lake sits just northwest of the city and supplies its drinking water, and Lake Wylie stretches southwest along the South Carolina line. Storage options on this page cover the north and southeast sides: Go Store It on Statesville Road points toward Lake Norman, while Superior Storage in Mint Hill and Morningstar in Matthews serve the suburbs along US-74 and I-485.
Covered, enclosed or outdoor: what Charlotte facilities offer
Outdoor parking is the norm in Charlotte, and the one published price list we found is modest. Superior Storage in Mint Hill charges $80 a month for a 20-foot space and $120 for a 40-foot space, enough for a pontoon on a trailer or a mid-size travel trailer. Go Store It on Statesville Road advertises outdoor parking for vehicles, boats and RVs inside a gated lot; we did not find RV space prices to verify.
Indoor space is harder to come by. Morningstar Storage in Matthews offers indoor car and RV storage along with outdoor RV and boat parking in spaces up to 14x45, long enough for most motorhomes. None of the three facilities we verified lists covered (roof-only) parking, so if you want shade without paying for a full garage, call the facilities directly and ask whether covered spaces are planned or available.
Because availability changes week to week, call before you tow. Ask about the width of the drive aisles, whether the lot is paved or gravel and whether they allow on-site maintenance such as battery swaps.
Access hours and security
Morningstar's Matthews location advertises 24/7 controlled access. Superior Storage keeps its gate open from 6 am to 11 pm every day, which covers early launches at Lake Wylie but not a 4 am departure for the coast. Go Store It describes a secure gated lot. Whatever you choose, photograph your rig when you drop it off, keep valuables out of a stored boat and use a hitch lock on trailers.
Parking an RV or boat at home in Charlotte
Charlotte regulates residential parking and outdoor storage through its Unified Development Ordinance, which replaced the old zoning ordinance in 2023. We could not load the UDO's current RV and boat provisions directly when we checked, so we are not quoting a specific section here. Before parking a camper or boat at home, read the UDO's residential standards or call the city's zoning enforcement staff, listed at 704-336-7600 on the city's neighborhood zoning page. That page also explains that suspected zoning violations are reported through 311 and inspected within three business days. Towns such as Matthews, Mint Hill and Huntersville have their own codes, and many HOAs in the Ballantyne and Lake Norman areas ban visible RVs and boats outright.
Charlotte weather and what it means for storage
NOAA's 1991-2020 normals for Charlotte Douglas International Airport show a July average high of 90.3°F and about 49 days a year at 90°F or warmer, so summer sun is a factor but not as punishing as in Texas or Arizona. Winter is the season that catches owners out: January averages 52.3°F by day and 31.8°F at night, and the airport averages about 58 nights a year at or below freezing. Snow is light, about 3.5 inches a year, and precipitation totals 43.60 inches, spread fairly evenly through the year. Winterize RV plumbing and outboard motors before the first hard freeze, usually in late fall, and check covers after storms. NOAA climate normals
Ramps, rentals and other North Carolina cities
Our Charlotte boat ramps page lists slipways OpenStreetMap shows within about 40 km that are not already on another city's page; most mapped Lake Norman and Mountain Island Lake access areas, such as Beatty Ford and Mount Holly, appear on our Mooresville pages. To empty tanks, see Charlotte RV dump stations, and find Mooresville and other cities on our North Carolina hub.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission handles boat registration, boating education and the public boating access areas; see its boating page.
Across our three Charlotte guides we currently list 6 storage facilities, 1 RV dump station, 2 named boat launches and 3 boat rental businesses. Storage details come from each facility’s own website and the date we checked it. Dump stations and ramps come from OpenStreetMap. We never add prices, ratings or availability that a source does not publish.
