Madison local guide

Madison is built on an isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, with Lake Waubesa and Lake Kegonsa downstream on the Yahara River, so boaters have four lakes within the metro. Pontoon rentals run on both main lakes, from Capital Lake Pontoons on Monona to Capitol Boat Club and Madison Boats on Mendota. Wheelhouse Storage on the east side is near I-39/90/94, Beltline Self Storage is on the Beltline south of downtown, and Grassland Valley is in Verona to the southwest.

Wisconsin winters close the season, and the lakes freeze over. Grassland Valley runs seasonal September-to-May storage, while Wheelhouse offers heated indoor bays with an on-site dump and water fill for RVs. Book winter storage early: Grassland says its concrete garage is already sold out for 2026-27.

Boating in Wisconsin: boats are registered with the Wisconsin DNR, and anyone born on or after January 1, 1989 needs a boating safety certificate to operate a motorboat. Remove aquatic plants and drain water before leaving a launch. Ramps and dump stations below come from OpenStreetMap.

Across our three Madison guides we currently list 3 storage facilities, 6 RV dump stations, 16 named boat launches and 6 boat rental businesses. Storage details come from each facility’s own website and the date we checked it. Dump stations and ramps come from OpenStreetMap. We never add prices, ratings or availability that a source does not publish.
