Minneapolis local guide

Minneapolis has lakes inside the city, but most power boating happens just west on Lake Minnetonka, the metro's biggest lake, and on the Mississippi and St. Croix rivers. Lake Minnetonka has several rental fleets, including Minnetonka Boat Rentals in Wayzata, Bay to Bay and Metro Lakes Marina in Mound. Acorn's NE Minneapolis and Bloomington sites offer outdoor spaces inside the metro, while Sharp Storage in Elk River, about 35 miles northwest, offers heated indoor units.

Minnesota winters are the defining storage issue: lakes freeze from roughly December to April, so most boats come out in fall. Indoor or heated storage is worth the price; outdoor rigs need full winterizing and a cover that sheds snow. Acorn notes it plows door to door at its indoor sites.

Boating in Minnesota: watercraft are registered with the Minnesota DNR, which also issues watercraft operator permits. State aquatic invasive species law requires you to clean off plants and drain water, with drain plugs pulled, before trailering away from any lake. Ramps and dump stations below come from OpenStreetMap.

Across our three Minneapolis guides we currently list 3 storage facilities, 5 RV dump stations, 15 named boat launches and 11 boat rental businesses. Storage details come from each facility’s own website and the date we checked it. Dump stations and ramps come from OpenStreetMap. We never add prices, ratings or availability that a source does not publish.
